Item details

These goddess carved bone pendant beads are abstract miniature representations of Austria's Venus of Willendorf statuette, one of the earliest images of the body made by humankind.

They're really only similar to the Venus, estimated to have been carved 24,000–22,000 BCE, but they are shapely with large breasts, a chubby tummy, and wide thighs.

Hand carved in Bali, Indonesia, each has a 1.5mm hole side drilled through the head, making them ideal to create an amulet.

There's no suggestion there are any special properties imbued in these pieces. Nor are they sophisticated carvings. Indeed they're quite primitive.

Please note that macro photography enlarges an item. These are not the same size as the real statuette. In this batch, the beads are just shy of 30mm. Please see other measurements below.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment.

From animist beliefs held in pre-Hindu and pre-Islam times in Indonesia, and on down the centuries, Javanese, Sundanese, and Balinese people have worshipped Dewi Sri as the goddess of rice and fertility.

Rice is the staple food of Indonesia so Dewi Sri is still worshipped by the people of these parts today.

That's quite remarkable when you consider that Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation. Nevertheless, the goddess is worshipped parallel to Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity without conflict.

The Balinese, who unlike the rest of Indonesia are mainly Hindu, have shrines in their ricefields dedicated to Dewi Sri and create effigies called Cili (pronounced chili) from young coconut leaves, lontar or pandan leaves, or from coloured sticky rice.

I've attended a ceremony in a Balinese ricefield to make offerings to the goddess and very sweet it was too.

“I don't know what it is about fecundity that so appalls. I suppose it is the teeming evidence that birth and growth, which we value, are ubiquitous and blind, that life itself is so astonishingly cheap, that nature is as careless as it is bountiful, and that with extravagance goes a crushing waste that will one day include our own cheap lives." ~ American author Annie Dillard.
