Item details

I have handspun this strong fibre into about 40 m of slightly thick and thin art yarn varying between an aran and a chunky weight. It is not suitable for wearing next to the skin but could maybe be added to some woven wall art or it would make a good strong addition to a woven or knitted bag.

The Devon and Cornwall Longwool is a very vulnerable British Rare Breed sheep as listed by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust: http://www.rbst.org.uk/Rare-and-Native-Breeds/Sheep. Here in Cornwall we are fiercely patriotic and as an ancient Celtic country we do not normally like to be associated with the English county of Devon! However, if you stand on Bodmin Moor you can see Dartmoor in Devon so it makes sense that we share a breed of sheep. This breed has evolved over centuries with the addition of Leicester and Lincoln to survive the desolate moorland. The breeds became so similar and both so rare that they officially became one breed in 1977. As with most of the native British sheep it has suffered from people wanting soft merino for their clothes and cheap synthetic fibres for everything else. This fibre can be used for things that merino can not and the Devon and Cornwall Longwool is also a very cute looking sheep!

FAQs

Due to the natural materials and plant dyes used, all items in this shop are one of a kind and cannot be replicated.

As my yarns, spinning fibre and botanical dyes are luxury, natural products they need to be hand washed gently in warm water and dried out of the sun to prevent felting and fading. Protect wool products from moths. With the right care these beautiful natural fibres can last a lifetime.
