Handspun fine 100% Shetland dyed beautiful golden bronze using 'Crottle' lichen gathered in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.
This is as fine a yarn as I spin. It takes ages but I like to keep spinning this sort of yarn for my shop because it's used for Norwegian and Shetland colourwork knitting (intarsia), which I like to promote.
In one of the pics you will see I'm getting 12 wraps per inch. You could knit this on 2.5-3.5mm needles.
The British grown Shetland fibre I used to spin this yarn was a white fibre to start with, before being layered in a 3 day lichen dyeing vat to produce this wonderful rich array of golden colours. It's a firm but soft Shetland. The yarn is as even as it's possible to get a hand spun yarn. This is an authentic Shetland Island colour, which would have been used for centuries on the Scottish Islands, and is part of the old Harris Tweed colour schemes.
If you are wanting to do a truly authentic Shetland piece, this is a great yarn to have in your stash to pick out the centre of Shetland designs. You may not need that much of it as often the designs call for many colours. Alternatively this would knit up really well into Norwegian style mittens or fingerless gloves, or a fisherman's kep. There are many uses.
Average yardage per skein approx. 58 yards Wraps per inch: 12 Needle size: 2.5-3.5mm Dye: Crottle Lichen Fibre: British grown white Shetland
