Item details

This is a self-paced, three-week online class to show you how to create colorful earrings with simple tools and techniques.

Those who’ve taken my classes or downloaded my tutorials before already know that I have a very hand-holding approach to teaching so expect to get a lot of information via thorough instruction.

I will show you how to add the colored pencil to metal, how to prepare textured settings in silver or copper, how to rivet the metals together, how to make earwires, and how to patina your textured metal.

In this class we will not be using torches. The only time you COULD use a torch if you like, is for making the ball end of our earwires (I will include instruction for those who are interested).

The Class Structure:

-- Shortly after registering for the class, student will receive a handout of materials and supplies needed so they can order them prior to the start of class
-- Class starts March 29, 2018
-- At the start of class, students will be given access to multiple instructional videos
-- Students may watch the videos at any time and in any order during the 21 days as many times as they like
-- The videos will be removed on April 19, 2018
-- At the start of class, students will be encouraged to join a private Facebook group page for this class. While it’s not necessary to join the Facebook group, doing so will enrich the learning experience and is highly recommended.
-- At the end of the month, the group page will still be accessible so that students may share progress, ask questions, and gather inspiration. The only thing unavailable after the class ends will be the videos and the instructor’s undivided attention (my attention will still be there; it will just be divided).
-- During the class, students will receive a handout with with bullet point reminders. Students will be able to keep these handouts and refer back to them when needed (no sharing or posting this info online, thanks).

During the workshop, some of the topics we will discuss include:
-- Preparing the metal
-- Adding colored pencils
-- Layering and blending
-- Sealing
-- Designing
-- Riveting
-- Patina
-- Metal texturing
-- Making earwires
As time permits, we may explore additional techniques such as tab settings and specialized riveting systems.

Testimonials from previous students:

(Online Jewelry Photography Workshop):
-- Thanks to Laura's great explanation of the camera settings, I'm feeling brave. Looking forward to playing with the cameras & following Laura's tips. The way she explained the F stops really clicked with the way I think, thanks Laura Bracken!
-- I've already learned so much just watching the videos and following the group discussions. So glad signed up. I think this has been a fantastic course and you are a well organized, detailed and all around wonderful instructor.
-- Thanks, Laura! This class was just what I needed. It's so satisfying to be able to get the shot I want on the camera. The less editing I have to do the happier I am.
-- You’ve truly been an excellent instructor and at some point I'd take the class again.
-- So organized and professional!

FAQs

Do not bend any metal components back and forth repeatedly; they will eventually crack. Metal may darken or dull over time. To restore shine, use a specially treated cloth like a “Sunshine cloth” (a sample is included with most orders). Don’t use silver “dips” or other similar metal cleaners as these etch away the metal, which increases tarnish. Most metal pieces suffer little damage with brief exposure to tap water (showers, etc), but saltwater (the ocean), bleach, and pool chemicals can be harsh to metal so remove jewelry before pool or ocean water exposure and before using bleach. Avoid water near Mood stones (the acrylic color-changing stones).

Yes. If you are not happy with your purchase, you will receive a full refund once the item is returned to me in the same condition in which it was sent. The piece must be returned within two weeks of customer having received it.

Each jewelry piece arrives in a gift box. Upon request I can also mail jewelry to gift recipients, adding a notecard from the buyer.

Yes. But please familiarize yourself with your country’s import duties and/or tax fees as the buyer is responsible for these. I report the full purchase price on the customs form when I ship. And contrary to any wording Etsy puts on my listings about the VAT being included in the purchase price, this is not true. There is no VAT charged to you at the time of sale. VAT and import fees are solely the customer's responsibility.
