Item details

My Irish grandma, Alice Shannon, was a woman with an entrepreneurial spirit who got the family through the Great Depression with her cooking. She took in boarders and fed them alongside the family with good plain food, including this great soda bread. Soda bread can be made with or without raisins and caraway seeds, but once you've made and tasted this one, heavy with both, you won't bake it any other way. And you won't limit making it to just once a year. Wonderful warm from the oven, my favorite way to eat it is lightly toasted. A wide-slot toaster, toaster oven or a broiler will turn thick slices into heaven. Butter well.
