This large sea clay marble was found on the beach in St Pierre, Martinique, scene of the 1902 catastrophic volcano eruption which destroyed the entire town and sank every ship in the harbour. Is it old enough to have bore witness to the disaster? That we will never know, but it certainly could be...
The marble has an approx. diameter of 7/8" and is predominantly white in color with an area of coloration as shown.
The stand is circular in shape with a concave centre leading to a small hole. Ochre in color and measuring approx. 1 1/4" in diameter, we have absolutely no idea what it could once have been a part of!
The last two pictures are an antique shot of St Pierre before the volcano eruption and St. Pierre as it looks today.
