Argus C3, 1939-57. In 1958 Argus made some minor changes to the C3, splitting production between the "Standard" and MatchMatic". The serial number tells the year of production, 1957 for this camera, #1662176.
Kodak invented the 35mm film cartridge but it was Argus who popularized it in America. Their best selling model from 1939 until the 1960s was the C3. with over 3 million sold. It wasn't just Argus' best seller, it was the best selling 35mm in the world for many years. Its nickname referred to the shape and the rugged reliability. The C3 is made primarily of bakelite and chromed steel, with aluminum alloy for the lens and controls. Argus never plated their aluminum so there is some oxidation on the rangefinder coupling gear and lens surround.
Everything works and is in superb condition. The bakelite and chrome are shiny, not nicks or scratches. Excellent display piece that is also a working camera. The Cintar 50mm f/3.5 lens is clear, the clean shutter operates at all speeds, and the aperture is free of oil and dirt. Comes with an Argus leather field case in OK condition, it is scuffed and has a broken strap.
This is a vintage camera you can enjoy today. The lens is good quality, the shutter reliable, all you need is film. Add a classic exposure meter and you have a kit. Ask me about a classic GE like the one I use. No batteries in these old guys.
