Vicuña is considered one of the finest fibers in the world. The fleece is so fine it is referred to as cloth of gold and at one time it could only be worn by Royalty. It comes from a relative of the Guanaco, Alpaca, and Llama and only produces a few ounces of fiber every couple of years. They are only found in South American countries, with Peru having the largest population. Poachers almost hunted the vicuña to extinction to obtain their valuable pelts.
Thankfully, intervention by means of rounding up and shearing these lovely animals resulted in a renewable resource and reduced the poaching. This shearing process takes place after an ancient Chakku ritual. This allowed the population to recover enough that in 2002 the fiber was allowed to be exported from some countries with a CITES permit. However, the fiber it is still rare and very valuable due to the competition from suit manufacturers so finding it is difficult.
This stunning fiber is in combed top form and so soft at 12 microns that it will about make you swoon when you touch it. This is 100% vicuña and spins like a dream into lovely fine yarn. You are buying 28 grams (1 ounce) in this listing. Look for this in other sizes. (The photos with the ruler shows what 7 grams looks like)
My test skein was 6.8 grams (just under 1/4 ounce) of two ply and is 35 yards with WPI of about 16. So you could get about 140 yards of 2 ply spun at that weight, and even more yardage if spun at a lace weight. Please be aware that your results may vary.
THIS FIBRE CAN ONLY BE SHIPPED TO COUNTRIES THAT ALLOW ITEMS ON THE CITES APPENDIX II LIST TO BE IMPORTED.
And now for the rest of the story: I do combine shipping on multiple items but they need to be paid for together – Please wait to pay until you are through shopping and when you check out it should reduce the shipping. International buyers are responsible for any customs fees their country might charge. I usually take close up photos.
