This is a French toile that is quite fascinating because I have not seen another one like this in all my years of searching for toiles. It is not in any of the books in my library, but it definitely is an older piece. Originally, it was a soft pink color and has faded to an even paler color or pink and in some areas, even a soft beige. All the motifs are done in a soft grey color. The scene is of an old woman reading the palm of a younger woman and beneath the older woman's skirt are some cards on the ground as well. The cherub above the fortune teller adds to the delight of the scene.
One edge of the piece, as well as the top and bottom, are filled with holes as if this had been used on a screen or some decorative element for a room.
The fabric appears to have no stains or marks and is a dense weave with a nearly brushed feel. There is the noticeable fading from the more vivid original pink to a lighter and softer tone.
This would be beautiful made into pillows for a room with more neutral colors or a softer palette. It would also be lovely used in a quilt or a small upholstery project.
I am selling this piece in one yard lengths and the width is 28".
