When I spotted this antique sampler on a certain well-known auction site, it was love at first sight. I dawdled, I hemmed and hawed, I pondered, and I decided to pass on the opportunity. Then I woke up the next morning and practically raced to my computer to see if it was still there! You know the end of the story already, for indeed, this little mis-fit of a sampler came to my home to live.
I carefully charted the original stitches, then found a linen and flosses that are as close a match as possible. Because the front of the antique is faded and stained, and since the original colors used are garishly bright, I struggled to choose a colorway for this pattern (ever look at the back of an old sampler? sheesh!). The scheme I ended up using is a bit brighter than the faded antique, but not as bright (by several shades) as the original threads. Included in the chart are two alternate groups of colors to pick and choose from based on your preference.
