I did not raise this rabbit, it was purchased from another grower. I tan all my own furs using the age old alum method. This method is environmentally smart. I flesh, wash, soften and stretch each hide over a 10 day period. After tanning the pelts are cleaned, tumbled, and checked for quality and condition. I have done over 1700 of them as of 2/1/18 Young rabbit skins tend to be small, not heavily furred, with thin leather. Good for doilies, craft work and wall hangers. My best skins are the late fall and early winter skins. The rabbits are over 14 weeks old. I will have a few of these each year, I am limited by the number of cages available. I keep the most interesting colors, and those with the best fur. These will be larger, and heavier furred, with better leather. a few raw hides are purchased from people who have bought breeding stock from me and also raise them humanely. To make the most of your fur, hang with the back end up for a day or two, preferably where it is cold. If you stroke the fur and it just lays down you are stroking front to back, if it stands up against you hand, it is back to front. To cut any fur, use a razor or exacto knife from the leather side, cutting the leather only. Best done outside or with a vacuum handy, there is always some fur that floats off. Keep dry, when gotten wet they need to be re-stretched or they will dry stiff.
