Item details

Learn how to revive the traditional practise of natural dyeing by creating and maintaining your very own indigo dye vat. Indigo is a natural dye extracted from the leaves obtained from those plants in the genus Indigofera, and it is breathtaking – it’s amazing that something that comes from a plant can create such rich, vibrant shades of blue.

According to Wikipedia: Indigo is among the oldest dyes to be used for textile dyeing and printing. Many Asian countries, such as India, Japan, and Southeast Asian nations have used indigo as a dye (particularly silk dye) for centuries. The dye was also known to ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, Egypt, Britain, Mesoamerica, Peru, Iran, and Africa. The oldest known fabric dyed indigo dating to 6,000 years ago was discovered in 2009 at Huaca Prieta, Peru.

Also included in this ‘simple to use’ starter kit are two Handmade Wood Clamps. These will enable you to explore the ancient Shibori techniques and create unique and interesting designs on the Organic Cotton Tote Bag provided. Shibori is a Japanese form of dyeing that revolves around different ways of binding and folding fabric to create different patterns, and is most commonly practiced with indigo dye. You can manipulate the fabric in so many different ways to create completely different patterns. . It’s so much fun and so rewarding when you see the results!
