Item details

The Labu Sayong is quite simply Malaysia’s most famous secret. Even within the country, although most Malaysians are aware of this pottery, few have them in their homes anymore. With the advent of plastic and ceramics, the use of this unique and wonderful item has unfortunately been declining.

‘Labu’ literally means squash or gourd while ‘Sayong’ is the name of the little town where these water vessels were invented and produced. Sayong Village is located in the State of Perak in Peninsular Malaysia, about 3 hours away from Kuala Lumpur. The region has long been known to possess good quality clay which is probably the reason why the Labu Sayong are so amazing.

The Labu Sayong water container is classic black and by its name is produced at a village called Sayong (in the district of Kuala Kangsar, Perak).

The Labu Sayong is popular for storing drinking water at homes. It is perfect for keeping water cool without refrigeration. It is also kept as a decorative item or proudly given away as souvenir.
