Heart shaped wire hook yarn holder. Traditional Swedish "nystkrok" - a hook designed to hold a ball of yarn and attach it to a belt or a strap on a bag. The perfect helper for those who like to knit (or do other types of yarn crafts- (crocheting, naalbinding etc.) on the move.
All of my yarn holders are handmade and therefore each is unique. This one is made of 1,5 mm iron wire and 0.5 mm copper wire and it measures 12,5 cm (approx. 5 inches) in length.
The nystkrok is designed to be used with balls of yarn where the string is pulled from the centre. The ball is attached to the hook by pushing the hook through the outer layer of threads, and the locking wire keeps the ball in place. The thread pulled from the centre can then run freely without tangling and without the ball rolling away. This model is made to be threaded onto a belt or other strap, for example on a bag (se the pictures). Note that the "in use" pictures are of a different item, and only meant to show how the nystkrok is used.
Traditionally in Sweden the animals would be brought to special summer farms for summer grazing. The women who went with the animals to watch and herd them were masters of multitasking and would often knit, spin, or even weave bands while walking with the animals in the woods. The nystkrok was a way of dealing with the yarn when the attention needed to be on the animals and the knitting and not on chasing escaped balls of yarn around.
