This is a beautifully hand-painted needlepoint canvas Christmas stocking. My mom always needlepointed through the winter starting in January because, I’ll paraphrase: I’ll have my gifts completed before the upcoming holidays since I never have time then to make anyone anything other than cookies. She was the consummate gift-giver. We all had, and still have, our stockings, and I have several needlepointed pieces she did including the chair pad I’m sitting on. Needlepoint projects become heirlooms....always.
Edi and Ginger were very prominent designers in the 1970’s, and I purchased several pieces, including this one, from Duckworth Designs in Arlington, VA. They weren’t inexpensive then either, but the details and skills shown in the paintings made them seem like art unto themselves. I worked up several, gave my mom a few, but still have a few that I know at this stage I won’t be finishing. Original Edie and Ginger canvases are no longer in abundance; not that they ever were but in their time they were highly sought after. This is an original.
The three wise men stocking here is extremely well painted in beautiful colors. Canvas is 18 gauge mono, and while it is vintage, it appears new. It has been stored carefully in my non-smoking home. Colors are bright and true.
Size: From top to bottom of image is 20.5”; at the top rim it is 10”; and at the bottom toe it is 11”. The canvas size is 24” x 17”. This is a large stocking and it is very detailed. Please see the enlargement for details. The white space within the image is for a name. What a perfect baby gift, especially for one born during the holidays.
