This listing is for the download of a PDF sewing pattern to make women's or men's western chaps. It is NOT for a physical paper pattern. Sizes are given for 19"-27" thighs as measured at the top of the leg. The pattern includes three different yoke and cuff styles and a choice of fringe or scallop edging. The back can be made with one or two conchos. See the diagrams above for these options.
The photos are of chaps made by SuitAbility customers using a previous version of this pattern and are not for sale. Credits: Turquoise chaps by Joyce Parr and silver chaps by Lisa Harrell-Brock. Any embellishments were added by the customers and are not included in the pattern.
The PDF file includes instructions illustrated with diagrams and the chap pattern pieces. The sizes are nested. Please read the instructions first to see how to print out each view. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PRINT OUT ALL PAGES IN THE PDF FILE. Download the file using Adobe Reader and print out the pages using 8 1/2" by 11" or A4 paper.
Chaps can be made from suede leather, smooth leather, or Ultrasuede (TM). Use 3-5 ounce leather, keeping in mind whether or not your sewing machine can handle the heavier leather. For Ultrasuede use the heaviest weight possible. Interfacing can be fused to the backs of Ultrasuede chap sides for extra stability, however ready-made Ultrasuede chaps aren't interfaced. Fringed chaps look better in real leather and scalloped chaps look better in Ultrasuede. Zippers and buckles for chaps can be found at leather supply stores and websites. Fancy buckles can be found at tack and western wear stores.
FITTING and SEWING
Fitting chaps is somewhat of an art. To be successful with this pattern you must make a sample first, using a heavy stiff material such as canvas. The pattern gives a measuring diagram and charts. You will most likely have to alter the pattern pieces to get a good fit.
The pattern also gives information on buying and sewing leather.
