Item details

Blackwork embroidery is a very old form of counted-thread embroidery. As many of the patterns used are geometric in nature, the embroidery is most often stitched on even-weave fabric e.g. Aida, Hardanger, Lugana and Linen.

The original purpose of Blackwork embroidery was to adorn collars and cuffs on clothing. It was originally worked mainly in black with gold highlights, though blue, green and silver were also used. Some Blackwork embroidery designs can be worked so that it is identical on both sides of the fabric. This makes these patterns particularly suitable to using on collars and cuffs.

Katharine of Aragon is most often credited with introducing Blackwork to England when she came to marry King Henry VIII. As she was from Spain, it became known as "Spanish Work" for a period of about 50 years or so. After Katharine’s divorce from King Henry VIII in 1533, the term "Spanish Work" was dropped and replaced with "Blackwork".

Instructions for completing Blackwork are included with each pattern. A general understanding of ‘Evenweave’ fabrics is assumed.

Please be aware you are purchasing and a Blackwork pattern along with Blackwork instructions to complete the embroidery yourself. You are not purchasing a completed item. Framing shown in photograph is to give you an idea of what the completed design will look like finished and framed.

‘Blackwork Sampler’ is a large completed piece in itself. The design size is 141 stitches x 180 stitches. The finished size of the piece would range from approximately 8" x 10" to 11" x 15' depending on the ' fabric count' the design is worked on.

If you prefer a small project, you are welcome to complete e.g. four of the patterns in a 2 x 2 grid format in one piece. You may want to complete three of the patterns in one piece to frame as a long narrow piece. Maybe you would like to complete each pattern as a smaller piece, frame them individually and chop and change the display on you wall 😊 That’s something I would do…

Off course, feel free to stitch them in colours of your choice.

FAQs

As all the products I sell on Etsy are digital and immediately downloadable on completion of the order, you have already received the product. Whilst every effort is made to ensure products provided are as described, I am a ‘real person’ and errors may inadvertently creep in :( Should this occur, I am more than happy to provide a refund or, off course, the correct product as described 😊👍 However, I am not able to provide refunds or exchanges if you simply change your mind.

This is a standard clause with Shop Policies provided by Etsy. Unfortunately, I am unable to amend or delete this item.

That's a tricky question to answer. The short answer is that they are as true as I can possibly make them given the number of variables involved in getting through all the various stages to the end product of a pattern in my Etsy store for sale :) Thread colours from the various thread manufacturers are 'imported' into various embroidery software design programmes via ways that I am not familiar with. I use various programmes to create my patterns and may move patterns between programmes for various reasons. Colour calibration for each brand of monitor, laptop, iDevice etc will vary. Then there is the lighting of where it is being viewed along with the variation of the perception of colour by us as individuals. Lots of variables in there:)
