Age: probably around the 1940's The country of Siam was officially and permanently renamed Thailand in 1948. My guess is that this pendant must have been manufactured before or around that date.
Size: diameter is 2"
Niello pendant depicting the goddess Mekkala. Neillo jewelry of this type was most commonly manufactured in black. The fact that this one is white gives it added interest.
According to the mythological tale, which was often told to children in Siam, Mekkala, the goddess of lightening was being pursued by Ramasoon, the god of thunder, who was in love with her. She did not feel love for him in return and shunned him. He became so upset by her refusal that he threw his axe at her, striking the crystal ball she always held. The force of the blow against her crystal ball sent forth a massive flash of light, creating the first ever lightening. Ramasoon then created darkness and rain so he could retreat under cover. He still pursues her to this day, throwing his axe at her whenever he finds her. It always misses her striking her crystal ball instead which sets off another lightening bolt followed by his roar of thunder.

Many of the things you will find in my shop are vintage, ethnic items. Please keep in mind that these are often made by primitive people under primitive circumstances and are rarely what we would consider to be perfect. There may be mismatched jewels, a definite patina and often there are irregularities in the metal. This is common and should be expected with this type of jewelry. I leave the patina in place for those who prefer an aged appearance. Most items can be polished with a mild jewelry cleaner if that is your preference.
