This is a set of instructions for making your own anatomical model of a breast. This includes knitting as well as some construction methods. I have designed this as an educational tool for breastfeeding, but could be equally useful in the sphere of breast cancer.
The boob measures 30cm (12") diameter and around 22cm (8.75") high, with a 38cm (15") diameter base made from plywood.
Skills needed for this project: Intermediate knitting Basic sewing Basic woodworking Papier mâché or Vacuum forming Don’t worry if you can’t do all this yourself, make it a group project sharing skills with your friends and family!
My ethos for work regarding breastfeeding stems from a need to engage with women and men in a straightforward and approachable fashion. Too much emphasis can be placed on the ‘breast is best’ ideology which preaches a holier than thou attitude. Women need to feel empowered to breastfeed. Issues of guilt about doing right by their babies and fear of the over-sexualisation of breasts both take this notion away and stop women finding help when they most need it.
