Item details

This 30mm double horn crescent pendant bead has been carved from brown horn in a potent design that remains popular in boho jewelry at the moment.

It's carved both sides with a smooth, curved surface, and drilled with a 2mm hole running top to bottom through the mid-section. The hole is actually visible through he semi-transparent horn.

Please note that horn is not a watersafe material and you should avoid wearing it in the shower, surf, for swimming pool.

The material is from the domestic water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis, a bovine animal similar to the cow, used throughout Asia as a plough animal in the rice paddies that produce the staple food of this part of the world.

The material used in Indounik products is sourced in Indonesia and the animals are not harmed for their bone or horn to be used in human ornamentation. It is a bi-product of animals that have come to the end of their life after being used for work and food - milk and sometimes meat.

This carving is also available in bone, wood, and black horn.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment if it's convenient for you.

BACK STORY
Mekepung or bull races are held in the west Bali regency of Jembrana from July to October each year.

Madurese migrants introduced the sport to celebrate the end of the rice harvest, and it has become a tourist attraction for one of the least visited regencies on the Island of the Gods.

While I'm not a fan of the use of animals for this type of sport and have never actually seen one of these events, the races are said to be thrilling contests between teams of two young water buffalo harnessed to a chariot.

The chariot is ridden by a jockey who holds onto the bulls' tails as they career down a 2km race course, kicking up dust and sweat.

The water buffalo used in these races are said to be treated with great care, and are fed elaborate diets containing "all sorts of wonderful potions and secret ingredients".

Most of the races happen outside the regency capital of Negara, next to a river estuary in the location of Parancak.
