Heart shaped wire hook yarn holder. Traditional Swedish "nystkrok" - a hook designed to hold a ball of yarn and attach it to a belt, bag, or other strap. The perfect helper for those who like to knit (or do other types of yarn crafts- crocheting, naalbinding etc.) on the move.
All of my yarn holders are handmade and therefore each is unique. This model is made of 1,5 mm galvanized iron wire and 0,5 mm stainless steel wire, and measures approximately 13 cm (5 inches) in length. Note that the "in use" pictures are of a different item, and intended to show how the nystkrok is used. If you would like a different style (colour, size or shape) of nystkrok than the ones I have listed, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
The nystkrok is designed to be used with balls of yarn where the string is pulled from the centre. The ball is attached to the hook by pushing the hook through the outer layer of threads, and the locking wire keeps the ball in place. The thread pulled from the centre can then run freely without tangling and without the ball rolling away.
Traditionally in Sweden and Norway the animals would be brought to special summer farms for summer grazing. The women who went with the animals to watch and herd them were masters of multitasking and would often knit, spin, or even weave bands while walking with the animals in the woods. The nystkrok was a way of dealing with the yarn when the attention needed to be on the animals and the knitting and not on chasing escaped balls of yarn around.
