Item details

Deluxe leather binding kit for stays and corsets. This complete kit has everything you need to bind historical stays and corsets with handsewn leather edging. A great many surviving sets of stays have a soft leather binding along the top and bottom (and sometimes front and back) edges. This strong but flexible fabric layer provided durable protection against the wear and tear of daily use, and also prevented the stiff “bones” from poking through the edges of the stays/corset and into the wearer!

Anyone who has ever made a set of historical stays can tell you that the binding step is by far the most frustrating and time consuming. This kit aims to make that process smoother and more enjoyable by providing all of the proper tools that are needed to complete this step with as little tears, blood, and grumbling as possible!

This deluxe kit includes:

-Approx. 15 feet of 1” wide hand-cut soft leather binding strips in either buttercream colored lambskin, or soft gray colored deerskin (this should be enough to completely bind most styles and sizes of stays. Please let me know if you need any extra.)
-6 multicolored seam clips
-1 size 10 Glover’s leatherworking needle
-1 metal fingertip thimble
-1 wire needle threader tool
- a page of tips, tricks, and suggested references
-the moral support and well wishes of generations of stay makers before you*

All packaged nicely in a muslin drawstring bag that is perfect for reuse and storage.

The leather binding is soft and flexible with a suede-like finish, and it stretches wonderfully around tabs and curves. The specialty needle makes sewing the leather a dream, and the included seam clips prevent the danger of being jabbed by pins at strange angles as you sew around tight curves. Having made stays without using these materials and again using the contents of this kit, I can absolutely say that having the right supplies makes this process so much easier and more pleasant.

Best of luck to you on your historic sewing adventure!

Extra binding and needles are available separately from this seller as well.

Such a great little kit! If you’re even thinking about making 18th century stays you should seriously consider this. It will make the process much smoother and give you a better finished result. Plus you can reuse many of the pieces. Seller was a joy to work with and the product arrived very quickly. Thank you!
