Anemopsis californica ‘Yerba Mansa’

Saururaceae: a marginal aquatic perennial growing to 50cm. Found in wet, especially somewhat alkaline or saline marshy places. White flowers consisting of petal-like bracts below a cone-like centre. Blooming from July - September. Forms a clump of broad green leaves. Native to California to Texas and México.

USES:

The fragrant rootstock is a highly valued medicine. Yerba mansa was widely employed by the native North American Indians to treat a wide variety of complaints. It is little used in modern herbalism. The whole plant has analgesic, antiperiodic, antiphlogistic, blood purifier, disinfectant, diuretic, laxative, stomachic and vulnerary properties. The dried and powdered plant is used as a disinfectant on wounds whilst the fresh moist leaves are used as a poultice or salve on burns, cuts and wounds.

GROWING INFORMATION:

Stand the pots in about 3cm of water and germination should take place in about 5 weeks. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for their first winter. making sure you keep the compost wet. Plant them out in late spring or early summer.

Requires shallow water or a wet muddy site in a humus-rich alkaline medium, in a warm position. Plants are hardy to about to -15°C and are probably hardiest when the rootstock is submerged.

[NOTES: The seeds are easy to sprout in glass baby food jars with an inch of mud covered with 1/2" of water, placed in full sun on a heating pad (110°F). The seed sprout in 5 - 15 days. Seedlings float free of the mud and can be picked off and potted. Or sow on sterile sand under fluorescent lights, bagged and moist, in 10 - 30 days. —Cook.]
