How to dye wool with Alkanet: Step-by-step instructions are beyond the scope of an Etsy listing. I recommend you do an internet search where you will find MANY good sites with instructions.
From internet sources, this is what I have gleaned, in general:
Water solubility is poor, but it is the safest method. Soak ALkanet in a jar filled with water and let it sit until the color has been extracted. This may take more than a week, according to sources.
Alkanet is readily soluble in alchol but this method is risky due to the flamability of alchol. When using this method, some have suggested soaking the material in a cheap bottle of vodka to extract the dye.
Once you have a dye liquor and have safely introduced fiber and fluid over heat, KEEP the temperature low. Do NOT boil. Do NOT simmer. Make sure alcohol has been diluted or evaporated before adding to heat. Work outdoors when using alcohol to extract the dye. DO NOT DRINK the used alcohol.
Wool dyed with Alkanet is not lightfast, but it will still be ok to use. It tends to fade slowly over time if introduced to light. Most natural dyes are not lightfast, so this is normal.
PHOTO Two: I did a small dye test and was very happy with the results; getting a nice violet. I did not use a mordant. I have not found any sources (yet) with concise instructions. From my small test, Alkanet will become a favorite dye for me.
