Item details

This Bali Bat Extra Large Carved Black Horn Bead would make an eye-popping piece of Halloween jewelry, are a great gift for those who love all things batty.

This guy measures about 50mm from the tips of his ears to his curled toes. There's a 2mm hole drilled sideways through him so he can hang upside down as if he's roosting from a piece of cord or leather thonging.Ideal for men's jewelry.

The hole can best be seen in my fifth photo. You may also see from the photos that the piece is more a very dark brown when seen in strong sunlight, though in most circumstances, including at night, it looks black. The eyes have been painted white.

This piece was crafted for me in Bali, Indonesia, by an artisan who specialises in carving horn, bone, shell and semi-precious stone. It's quite a different design than the black horn bats that I've stocked in the past.

The horn material is from the domestic water buffalo, Bubalus bubalis, a bovine animal similar to the cow, used throughout Asia as a plough animal in the rice paddies that produce the staple food of this part of the world.

The material used in Indounik products is sourced in Indonesia and the animals are not harmed for their bone or horn to be used in human ornamentation. It is a bi-product of animals who have passed away after being used for work and food - milk and sometimes meat.

IMPORTANT: Horn is not a water safe material and jewelry made with it should not be worn in the shower, surf or swimming pool. Clean with a little jojoba oil on a soft, lint-free cloth. You may need to use a soft brush to get into the grooves.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment.

BACK STORY
On a visit to Bali in 2004, I happened to be staying in an upstairs room at an old establishment Seminyak hotel, the Bali Agung Village.

With the moon for an escort, I'd wander back from a night out and stand on the balcony for a bat's eye view of these little creatures flitting about among the palm trees.

The experience totally changed my opinion about bats. They went from being spooky to cute.

That said, you might not be quite so enamoured of the fruit bats that inhabit Bali's famous Goa Lawah Bat Cave on the island's east coast, in the regency of Klungkung.

The cave is home to thousands of the little critters, and, according to legend, a giant dragon-like snake called Basuki. It's the bats, not Basuki, who are responsible for the inescapable smell.

Legend also has it that the cave extends all the way to the island's most sacred temple, Besakih, more than 30 kilometers (19 miles) away. Fear of Basuki has kept locals from checking whether this is really so.

In front of the cave opening is the small but significant Hindu temple of Goa Lawah, Bali's foremost temple in matters pertaining to the afterlife.

In Bahasa Indonesia, goa means cave and lawah means bat. You can see a virtual tour of Goa Lawah here: http://www.panoramicearth.com/641/Bali/Goa_Lawah_Temple_-_Bat_Cave
