This is a Original Hieber rabbet plane, the makers mark has the year 1876 on it, but it was likely made long after then. the plane itself is in great working condition. It seems like it was almost unused by its previous owner.
It was originally coated in varnish, but because it is so old, most of the varnish was chipping or completely missing. I removed the varnish by hand, and coated it in a very handsome grape seed oil. if you wish to keep it in good condition coating it once or twice a year would make this fine tool very gracious.
The body of the plane is marked "30" on the back, as well as on the blade, ensuring that this is a matching set. The blade also has another makers mark imprinted on it, witch features an interesting design. There is some mild grain lifting where the wedge meets the body, but with regular oiling this will go away over time. The body is made of several pieces of beech, a very hard, rigid wood witch changes very little over time, keeping the sole of the plane true. The original wedge that came with the plane was missing when I found this plane, so I carved the wedge seen in the photos by hand into a traditional shape using the traditional techniques. I carved the wedge from a piece of european beech witch had a very similar grain pattern to the rest of the plane.
I have sharpened the blade myself to be razor-sharp by hand on whetstones, I only recommend mild further honing. I do not use any power tools when restoring these fine tools to insure that the most care is taken, and that the heat treatment in the blades I restore will not be drawn out.
please only purchase if you have acquired the skills to maintain this tool or have plans to acquire them.
