BACK STORY
The coconut tree - Cocos nucifera - is a member of the palm tree family Arecaceae and the only species of the genus Cocos.

In Bali, they use absolutely every scrap of a coconut palm tree and its fruit, the humble coconut. Balinese people consider the tree a symbol of life and fertility.

One of the most unique uses of the fruit is as a source of holy water. Once a young coconut contains liquid, the Balinese call this fruit bungkak. It is opened and the contents are sprinkled on offerings to the gods, or over places to be purified.

Coconut water from young fruit is known as air kelapa muda, and is consumed as a flavorsome, quenching drink that can prevent dehydration and provide a rich source of electrolytes.

The Balinese also ferment this liquid to make an alcoholic beverage known as tuak.

The shell is used in all sorts of handicrafts, including buttons that you can find here in my shop, and for making utensils such as a rice scoop.

Palm leaves get woven into canang trays to contain offerings to the gods, while the spines of older dried leaves are collected and pulled together to make a broom called sapu lidi.

The trunks have traditionally been used for building materials. There are myriad other uses of the various parts of this wonderful tree, too numerous to mention.

As for me, I find simple pleasure in seeing the shadows cast by the leaves from high above.
