Here is a fun shape in a bold web stone from the Prince Mine!
19x8mm, 4.5mm dome
This stone is 100% natural, personally mined and cut by us. Great webbing on the back too!
This Stone’s Provenance
This variscite formed in ancient seafloor shale in the area that is now known as the Prince mine in Mineral County, Nevada near the Candelaria Mining District. This area is famous for its silver and turquoise. Our operation at the Prince mine in 2005 produced large veins and nuggets of minty green variscite, both pure color and with intricate to bold spiderweb patterning. Impressive black, orange, and yellow variscite also comes from this mine. We worked quite deep along the vein and then refilled the hole as part of the reclamation work. As a result, the vein has not been mined since then, and this wonderful gem is only becoming more and more rare.
Variscite is a mineral closely related to turquoise – mineralogically speaking, a “hydrous aluminum phosphate” – with the distinct difference of containing no copper. Copper gives turquoise its characteristic blue color. Without copper, variscite in its purest form is white, but often it occurs in a variety of colors: green, yellow, orange, and black. Chromium and vanadium are the metals reported to give variscite its bright green colors, while iron, manganese and other metals can contribute to its other colors. Variscite from our mines in Nevada has a high silica content which gives it hardness and excellent durability for use in jewelry.
Both turquoise and variscite are very special gemstones…they are stones connected to life! Two of their main components, phosphorous (much of which comes from ancient bone) and water are critical ingredients of life. Oxygen is also a key element, oxidizing the various metals to give the stones their beautiful colors. Turquoise and variscite are truly gems dependent on a life-giving planet…rarities, not just here on Earth, but throughout the Universe! Variscite is said to have properties that help alleviate worry, provide encouragement, and inspire hope.
Because of its unique composition, each locality where turquoise or variscite is found imparts its own character on the stone. Each locality also has its own individual history. Many of our mines were worked for turquoise many decades ago, and have since become classic turquoise localities. We are excited to have opportunity to carry this history forward into the next generation. Some are new localities we have discovered, new classics in the making!
We hope you will find this stone as inspiring as we do!
