Old stock (1970's) Petrified Palm Wood or Tree Fern slab with nice graduated golden to beige colors on this slab. Nice cell definition typical to palm wood with the dotted landscape (would be linear if cut lengthwise on the slice to the trunk). The edge bark is displayed all around the slab as this is a complete round slice. These pictures are taken both dry and damp. There are no fractures or vugs on this slab - some natural pits in the outermost bark due to the once fibrous material. The stone has been left natural with no treatments. Slabs are sold 'as is' as shown in the photos and are not substituted.
This slab weighs 175.6 grams (878.0 carats) and measures 15 cm x 9.9 cm x 6.3 mm. Measurements are approximate and are measured from the widest or longest points of the stone; width is measured in the center. Palm Wood is a variety of chalcedony with a hardness of 7.5 on the Mohs scale of hardness.
Millions of years ago during the Carboniferous Period, areas were lush tropical forests containing ferns as large as trees known as Tree Ferns (or petrified Palm Wood). Flowering and seeding plants took over and the ferns were crowded out. As these fell, they became encased in the mineral-rich mud preserving them from oxygen which causes decay. As these forests dried up, silica minerals replaced the plant cells retaining the detailed shapes of the plant and petrified into the beautiful fossil wood we see today. Whether your piece has spots or rods depends on the direction of the cut on the stone. Petrified Palm Wood is also known as Palmoxylon and ranges from 84 to 11 million years old. Due to the age of these, pieces in good condition are difficult to find today, especially the complete cross-section. Palm Wood is found in Argentina, Egypt, Germany, Libya and the United States.
Petrified Palm Wood is a stone known for general protection. It can give one grounding and helps stabilize one's emotions and calming fears. Palm Wood can assist you in making connections with the past. It can allow you to live in the flow of life with patience. It can give you courage to conduct the right actions. These beliefs are spiritual supporters and not prescriptions or substitutions for medical healthcare.
Natural stones almost always contain surface impurities like fissures, vugs, fractures (healed or fresh). We try to note if there are any surface features you should be aware of and won't knowingly sell a stone without disclosing in the description of such. We try to list pictures showing all surface features or post information if there are surface features you should be aware of.
Please inspect your stones prior to your use to avoid unexpected breaks later. It breaks my heart to see my husband test a slab by putting pressure to a suspected weak spot and sometimes snaps a slab (if it has a weak spot), but, if you don't test it, half way through your cabochon, it could naturally split on you. Better to remove all doubt before starting.
We don't alter the colors in our photographs, though digital photo colors vary between cameras and depending on the lighting where the photos are taken so please view all photos before purchasing. Naturally lighted photos will be provided whenever possible, but some photos are taken indoors. Photos of this piece were taken indoors, both dry and wet. My apologies for any glare on any of the photos and the flash has a tendency to wash the colors, therefore, some photos may be with or without flash trying to capture the most lifelike appearance.
