I decided to put together this interchangeable whorl support spindle starter kit in order to introduce spinners to what I believe is the most versatile spindle available. This kit really is two spindles in one! And, there's a little discount by buying these all together (sold separately, the cost would be $90)!
With the lighter hand-dyed River Birch whorl attached to the black walnut shaft, you have a Tibetan spindle weighing .75 oz. Switch to the heavier hand-dyed Maple whorl, and you have a support spindle weighing 1 oz.
With my Interchangeable Whorl Tibetan spindles, you can:
1.) Switch from a light weight spindle to a heavier spindle (and vice versa) by simply removing one whorl and replacing it with another of a different weight.
2.) Easily remove the whorl altogether to lessen the weight once you have a heavy copp.
5.) Brag to your friends that your spindle is a Super Hero!
To change the whorl, simply give it a gentle twist to release it or secure it in place. All my Interchangeable Whorl System spindles and whorls are, well, interchangeable with each other!
Since this listing is made to order, the following specs are close approximations.
Weight of shaft: .35 oz./ 10 g. Length of shaft: 10.5"/26.5cm Weight of lighter whorl: .40 oz. Weight of heavier whorl: .65 oz. Total weight: .75 oz. (shaft + lighter whorl) 1 oz. (shaft + heavier whorl)
Many thanks to my good friends in the Ravelry Support Spindlers Group for the inspiration to make these spindles!
All of my spindles are tested by me, my wife, or one of my daughters before shipment. Sometimes it is necessary for me to pin weight the whorl with a small copper pin(s) in order to make it perfectly balanced.
This spindle, like all of my offerings, is French polished then buffed to a satin sheen with my very own homemade beeswax finish.
I use sustainable hardwoods from Johnson Creek Hardwoods, a local, family run mill. http://www.johnsoncreekhardwoods.com/
