The original inspiration for Woodland Mittens was a hat that I designed a few years ago for the Ravelry Designer’s Challenge, based on a woodland theme. This stitch pattern brought to my mind the image of moss in the knots of trees, with it’s double-moss stitch enclosed within the cable sections.

I thought that the stitch pattern also would work well for a pair of mittens, and so, these mittens were born! The mittens are knit from the 1 by 1 ribbed cuff up and the thumb is done with a side-seam thumb gusset. The cable motif continues through the top decreases of the mitten.

The mittens are mirrored, with a different left-hand and right-hand mitten. Each mitten has a cable pattern on the back of the hand and a slipped-stitch textured palm. The extra yarn on the palm helps keep the hand warm and provides an additional layer against friction and wear (as well as providing help in making snowballs!)

The sample was knit in Baa Ram Ewe’s Dovestone DK, which is a DK-weight blend of several different breeds of sheep’s wool. If you’re substituting yarns, I’d suggest something with a mostly wool content, with at last 50% Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) if possible. You could use a sport-weight yarn in substitution, but I’d suggest a DK-weight if possible. Please bear in mind that the two larger sizes may require two skeins of recommended yarn, depending on your exact gauge.

FAQs

For a custom-designed knitwear piece, what can I expect? I will contact you to discuss sizing, modifications, fiber choice and colour. My materials for commissions are ordered on demand, so there will be a delay before I can begin the creation process. I will set a price quote based on our initial conversation once materials are chosen and the cost of materials is known, but I reserve the right to alter that price if changes are requested after the beginning of the creation process. Payment is required either when I begin the creation process, or when the item is complete, depending on the nature of the item and the type of customization requested.

What is your studio space and do you have pets? My studio space is also my home; and yes, I have two cats who share it with me. While all commissions are washed thoroughly before being sent, if you are sensitive to cat dander or fur, I cannot guarantee that your item will not have small traces of dander, despite my best efforts.

What is your studio space, and do you smoke in it? My studio space is my home, and it is a smoke-free environment.

What patterns can I request custom orders based on? You can request custom orders from any of my patterns (including patterns that are not available via my Etsy Store). My entire pattern portfolio is visible here: http://www.ravelry.com/designers/sarah-dawn.

If you are unhappy with your purchase, you can return it within 14 days of delivery. Items for return must be unworn and in good condition (no stains, obvious wear, or damage). The cost of return shipping is the responsibility of the customer. I suggest returning it via a delivery service that offers tracking, so that it is sure to be returned to me. Note that Sale Items, Digital Downloads, Jewelry, Custom Orders, and Intimate Garments may not be returned. Please contact me before sending an item for return.

Shipping is done through Canada Post, and all physical items are shipped with delivery verification. Shipping Costs for jewelry is a flat-rate of $15 CAD within Canada and the US for any number of items. Shipping costs are included within the cost of knitted garments and accessories. I do offer basic letter-mail shipping at a lesser cost for those items small enough. This option does not include tracking or delivery confirmation. The individual listings will note if that option is available. If you wish rush shipping, contact me for an estimate before placing the order.
