There are 123 pearl or shell buttons hand sewn onto this 6" by 11 and 1/2" card. (Currently button collectors usually mount their buttons on 9 by 12 cards). There is a large variety of sizes, shapes and designs. There are some carved, some that have 4 holes, some with two and some that are "Whistles": one hole on the front, two holes on the back. There are some with shanks. A few of the buttons are colored. Two of the large buttons have some damage. One of the medium ones has some chips. The rest are in good condition. I am estimating the age of the collection to be the 1930s. There are several names that have been written on the card indicating from who the buttons came. Because the hand writing is the same, I think that this card of buttons was created by the same person who made the other, china button card, that I also have listed: "J. Cleveland".
This is a very special collection of pearl or shell buttons: because of their age, careful selection and having been hand sewn to a card. While they could be used in jewelry and in special garments, these are wonderful for collectors to display with antique sewing items. Finding an old, mounted collection such as this one is an unusual find.
