Item details

These pieces were fun to make, and they look great! We took irregular scraps of a variety of fabrics in dark greens, olive, khaki, tan, and scarlet, and bonded them together into a gorgeous 5/16" laminate slab. The fabrics included some loosely woven ones like canvas and burlap, as well as some more finely woven twills and other cottons. The two pieces you will receive measure 1 1/2" wide by 5 1/4" long, and are very strong due to the overlapping fabrics. These scales can be used for many jewelry applications, such as lapidary pendants, beads, barrettes, and buttons, as well as knife handles or gun grips. The material can be shaped, sanded, and buffed using normal woodworking tools and techniques.

Due to the random placement and variety of fabrics, each set of scales is one-of-a-kind, and pictures of sample finished products will not represent exactly what your finished item may look like. The last photo shows a knife handle made from the same type of Rainbow Laminate in a different color combination.

Finishing instructions: Sand finished pieces to a 600 grit or higher, then apply a coating of wax & let dry, and buff with a wheel or soft cloth for a matte finish. To glaze to a high-gloss finish, do not wax but spray with a polyurethane finish. Some oils tend to darken the colors quite a bit (tung oil and boiled lindseed oil) so we do not recommend these. However, a light coating of WD-40 gives the surface a "wet look" that brings out the pattern. Because they are thoroughly inundated with epoxy resin, the finished product will be waterproof with no seal needed. It is not unusual to find an occasional "pinhole" in the material--that is part of the character of this laminate. If undesired, pinholes can be filled with superglue before finishing.

We will be adding new colors and designs frequently, so please check back often. Feel free to contact us about specific colors--we love custom work!
