AFRICAN DREAM ROOT (Silene capensis) Silene Capensis or African Dream Root hails from the eastern cape of South Africa and is regarded as a sacred plant. It is used to help with insomnia and increased relaxation. It has fragrant flowers that open only at night.
Shamans claim that this plant induces vivid, lucid and even prophetic dreams. We have some experience using this root to assist with sleep and have definitely noticed a change in our dream-state, particularly when taken several nights in a row. Upon waking, dreams feel much closer and clearer than usual and there is a general feeling of significance regarding the dream. This is a fascinating plant to explore.
SINICUICHI (Heimia salicifolia) Also known as sun opener, plant of yellow vision, shrubby yellowcrest, willow-leaf heimia.
Sinicuichi is an ancient plant native to Southwest America, Mexico and Central America. Indigenous people are well familiar with this plant and its many uses, some of which include: accelerated healing to the skin when applied as a salve, muscle relaxant, improved memory performance, fertility in women, reduction of blood pressure, insect repellant and sleep inducer. Legend claims that this plant, when made into a tea and allowed to sit in the sun for 24 hours, will embed the knowledge of the sun into the liquid. Sinicuichi is held as a sacred plant with supernatural powers, used by shamans to induce vivid memories that allow you to relive your past as though it were happening in the present. Some stories relate users being able to recall prenatal memories. Others relate auditory, visual and space/time effects.
Prefers full sun and well drained soil. Seeds are tiny! Press into soil and keep moist until germination.
TAGETES LUCIDA (Mexican Mint Marigold, Mexican Tarragon)
Also known as Sweet Mace, Tumutsáli, Yahutli, Cloud Herb, Flor de Santa Maria
This plant is amazing in every way. It has a great licorice-y scent and taste (we call it rootbeer marigold) and makes a really lovely tea. Not only is it delicious, but incredibly medicinal and a very effective relaxant. It is used to calm the stomach, soothe tension and helps with hangovers as well.
Tagetes lucida has a powerful history and has been used by the Aztecs as a ritual incense and today is used as an offering to the dead in Dia de los Muertos celebrations. This flower is also used in Nepal and India in Hindi and Tantric ceremonies.
VALERIAN: (Matricaria recutita) Also called All Heal and Garden Heliotrope.
Valerian is a well-known herb plant and highly prized as a medicinal herb. It is a hardy perennial with a history of use dating back to the 16th century. It is very ornamental with fern-like foliage and white to light lavender blooms that are attractive to butterflies.
The root of Valerian is most commonly used as medicine. It is used to soothe anxiety, relieve pain, and calm minds that cannot fall asleep. In many parts of the world, Valerian root is the standard care for stress and relaxation. The root has a really interesting, rather pungent scent that might take awhile to get used to.
We have quite a bit of experience using this plant for sleep aid and it's affects are very noticeable. We owe many a good night's sleep to this plant!
