I use 2 Lathes to complete this style of pen. Ornamental Pen Turning is an enjoyable hobby, but it sure takes patience! The average pen takes one week to complete. The reason is due to 2 main factors:
a) The Ornamental Lathe is turned by HAND! Yes, though the cutting bit spins at speeds around 12,000 R.P.M., I must turn the lathe (by a series of gears) in order to complete the cuts. I can not turn to lathe too fast or rough, jagged edges are visible. Too slow and some wood types will start to cook off and score the wood to a char. Either case is not pretty, and are not good enough for sale.
b) Andrea works the finishing protective coats on the wood. There are different finishes for various types of wood! But, due to the deep scores in the wood, each turned pen blank must be coated and hung to dry over night before the next coat is able to be applied the next day. Andrea does this process 5 or 6 times, which in turn almost equals a week of drying time. The end product is just stunning though! Our local customers (Craft Sales & Flea Markets in our neighbouring towns) sure appreciate how shinny and tough her finishes are!
