This is one of the best pieces of Alexandrite I have had the pleasure of cleaning. It is a solid, heavy chunk of Alexandrite crystals all merged together in a 4cm by 3cm size. This massive piece of mostly pure Alexandrite is a specimen for the real collector, it has a bold character, and the color change is absolutely unbelievable. This stone weighs a whopping 38 grams, making it the biggest piece that I currently have on sale.
Alexandrite is sought after due to its color changing property. This gemstone has been described as an emerald by day and a ruby by night because its color turns bluish green in daylight, and changes to purplish red when placed under luminescent light. Alexandrite is also a birthstone of June, and is a traditional gift for 55th anniversaries.
Alexandrite is an extremely rare and expensive gemstone, listing at number 5 on the top 10 rarest gemstone list, and at a solid 8.5 on the Mohs scale (hardness)
I have spent the past several weeks carefully hand cleaning this using no chemicals and no drills, only a needle to expose the crystals. Found in Zimbabwe, this rare and wonderful stone we call Alexandrite is truly one of southern Africas finest gemstones.
