Civil War inspired quilt pattern - Winds of War
Finished quilt measures 58” x 72”

During the late 1850’s tensions were growing in the United States. John Brown’s raid on Harper’s Ferry, his capture, and hanging had galvanized Northern feelings of resentment against the South’s system of slavery. Southerners were upset with what they thought was an attack on their way of life and believed in state’s rights to govern themselves. Abraham Lincoln’s election added to the turmoil that fanned the winds of war. The country braced for a war both sides believed was coming.
The inspiration for Winds of War came from an orphan block I purchased at the Des Moines, IA Quilt Expo. The little block was poorly pieced, but made with wonderful 1860’s prints. I hope that long-ago quilter would approve my interpretation of her block.

Fabric Requirements…
1 ⅞ yds light/shirting for blocks
1 ½ yds light/shirting for borders
1 ½ yds assorted darks/mediums for blocks and pieced border
1 yd blue for setting blocks
⅔ yd red for setting and corner triangles
½ yd for bias binding
4 ½ yds for backing (45” wide fabric)
*A 4 ½” squaring ruler is helpful!
