Malva nicaeensis ‘Bull Mallow’

[Ex. Gouves, Crete, Greece]

Malvaceae: an annual or biennial herb producing a hairy, upright stem up to 60cm long. Found on stony and rocky ground, and wasteland. Flowers appear in the leaf axils, each with pinkish to light purple petals around a 1cm long. The disc-shaped fruit has several segments. Blooming from June – September. The leaves are up to 12cm wide and have several slight lobes along the edges. Native to Europe to Western Asia. An introduced species in Britain.

USES:

In the Levant, mallows grow profusely after the first winter rains. The leaves and stems are edible, and are widely collected by indigenous peoples for food, as they make an excellent garnish when chopped and fried in olive-oil with onions and spices. In Israel, the Arabic name for this plant, "chubezza" (Arabic: الخبيزة‎), is well-known and is used also by Israelis whenever referring to the plant.

GROWING INFORMATION:

These perennial seeds germinate very irregularly over a long period. Lower temperatures of less than +5°C [41°F] are very effective. Seed trays should not be discarded prematurely. Constant moisture must be maintained. Do not leave in direct sunlight.

A very easily grown plant, succeeding in ordinary garden soil, though it prefers a reasonably well-drained and moderately fertile soil in a sunny position. This species is closely related to M. sylvestris but having smaller flowers.

NOTES: Seeds do not all germinate at once, you will only find that a few will germinate straight away the rest will germinate over a longer period. If sown in the autumn plants will start flowering in April.
Attracts bees.
