Item details

This 100% natural, robin's egg blue Morenci Turquoise cabochon would make a gorgeous bracelet or necklace; a beautiful wire wrapped pendant; or a pendant set in silver or gold; or a bold and stunning ring; or...??? The possibilities are limited only by your imagination! We have dozens more Morenci Turquoise cabs up to about 47 carats, so if you're looking for a particular size or shape of stone, please send us an email. By law, the descriptive term "natural" can only be applied to stones that have not been stabilized, dyed, or treated in any way. In other words, these Turquoise cabochons are cut from rough stones just as they have come out of the Earth. One of the first American turquoises to come to the market, Morenci is well known, highly valued, collectible, and now difficult to obtain. The fact that Morenci Turquoise is no longer being mined, along with its beautiful robin's egg blue color and unusual matrix, makes Morenci very valuable in today’s turquoise market. We had the good fortune of procuring a small lot of gemmy natural Morenci Turquoise cabochons from an internationally acclaimed Tucson jeweler who had cut the stones in his own studio. We got a fair deal and we're passing the savings on to our customers. From the information we could gather, this lot of turquoise was probably mined in the 1980’s. Set in gold or silver it would make stunning jewelry, or simply be impressive cabochons in a fine collection of classic Southwestern US turquoise specimens. As you can see in the photo that shows the reverse side and the weight, the stones are backed with epoxy for strength, a standard practice in the lapidary arts (see note below). We do our best to take photos in good light that reflect the true colors and the colors shown are very close to the actual shade of turquoise. Colors on other computer monitors may vary slightly.

We have dozens of Morenci Turquoise cabochons from this same batch, so if you are looking for a particular shade or maybe a matched set of a certain number of cabs, just let us know and we can put together a reserved lot of stones for you.

We used to own and manage a small hand-crafted jewelry business called "Silver and Stone Works" in New Mexico. However, in 2016, due to health reasons, we relocated to the Oregon Coast and decided to close the business. We always took great pride in using the highest quality (and sometimes quite rare) materials we could locate, many purchased directly from the source. We now find themselves with a leftover inventory of finished cabochons and preformed cabochons, and are selling everything at very competitive prices.

A brief history of Morenci turquoise... The first copper strike by an Anglo in Arizona was by Henry Clifton, in the area now known as Clifton in what was at the time the Arizona Territory, in 1863. No claim was staked there because of the threat of Indian attack. In 1870, Robert Metcalf staked a claim there, then sold controlling interest to Henry and Charles Lesinsky. They later formed the Longfellow Copper Mining Co. in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They set up camp and called it Clifton. Clifton later grew into one of the largest copper mining communities of Arizona and the mine later became know as Morenci. From 1956 to 1984 the turquoise rights were granted to William "Lucky" Brown who had an extensive mining career. The Morenci Mine produced quantities of high grade turquoise and was marketed through family operated trading posts in New Mexico and Arizona. Lucky retired in 1982 and his sons continued to mine the turquoise until the lease ended. The Morenci Mine is currently owned by Freeport-McMoRan and is the largest copper mining operation in North America.

Turquoise from some of the larger commercial copper mines like Bisbee and Morenci was often obtained by company employees taking it home in their lunch boxes. Thus the term "lunch box rocks". Though this activity was prohibited, the prohibition was rarely enforced. Sometimes this was the primary source for fine Turquoise.

Turquoise has been used for millennia as a spiritual stone. Worn anywhere on the body, a Turquoise stone will protect and bless the wearer. The "water and sky stone" is considered a sacred stone in some cultures, being a gift from the gods.

** The need for backing turquoise goes back more than a century, to the old-time silversmiths who set turquoise and discovered that over time turquoise sometimes cracked. Turquoise is a very unique stone, it is not formed in nature like most other stones. Turquoise often forms in thin veins in the hard or soft mother rock. These veins can be extremely irregular and if the cutter were to grind one side of the stone flat to start with, in some cases there may not be much stone left. The old cutters found that if they ground the backside flat to set the cabochon in jewelry, they needed to add backing to replace the ground off material, helping retain the integrity and strength of the stone. In many types of jewelry set with cabochons, the bezel generally hides the backing and the buyer is often unaware the stone is actually backed. **
