Item details

Long piece reasonably priced!! I am selling the whole piece as one.

This is a nice long panel which would make a great scarf as is! It is light like sarashi, or like gauze, and used to a nice soft state. Feels super on the neck.

Nicely faded, you can see a nice dark shade which is closer to the original color on the edges, the parts which were under seams. The faded middle part is a great medium indigo blue. You can also see the nice bumpy selvedges which show it was hand woven.

There is one big old hole in this fabric around halfway through which is repaired with a big patch. Boro style mend. I also see a group of small holes right at the center which have not been mended. And then a few along the very edge, also, small holes from when it was a futon cover or whatever it was.

Katazome is a resist dye process. Stencils are used to apply a thick resist paste made from rice called nori, to the fabric. When the nori dries and the fabric is dyed, the place which got pasted remains white and the rest dyes. Wash out the paste with hot water and the process is finished.

Some katazome fabrics get pasted on just one side, and some get pasted on both sides, for a different effect. This fabric got pasted on just the front, i think. The fabric is so porous and thin, that the nori basically seeped through to the other side, and effectively resist dyed both sides. The back looks similar to the front side. But just a little lighter. It actually look as if the indigo was applied to only the front as well. The indigo blue looks light on the back as the definition of the pattern is also somewhat less.

A very classic pattern, chrysanthemum and karakusa.

This is a long panel for a great price, very reasonable. I have seen this type of fabric for over 60$ a yard, at which price this piece would be more than 100$. Get it quick!!

Although this service offers no tracking No. or insurance. On rare occasion, it can take longer than usual, there are losses. I cannot be responsible for losses or delays(although I definitely won't leave you hanging either...).

Returns & exchanges

Everything sold "as is". I will work with you to the best of my ability if there is a problem. If you feel I misrepresented the item or there is any other type of problem, contact me and we will work it out. But being in Japan, the postage is a factor and makes refunds and exchanges a bit difficult.
