Many a talented hand resides on the Island of the Gods, Bali. It's said that all Balinese are artists and this seems to be true, whether they be painters, sculptors of stone or wood, carvers of bone, shell or horn, silversmiths, makers of the elaborate costumes worn in performance theatre and dance, crafters of the intricately patterned shadow puppets known as wayang kulit, the dalangs who control them, carvers of the tiny picture stories inscribed in lontar palm leaf books, or the makers of batik, ikat and songket textiles.

Or, more simply, the makers of the intricately woven and elaborately constructed offerings to the gods that are made in every quarter of the island pretty much every hour of every day.

Everywhere you go on this captivating island, you'll see evidence that the Balinese have woven art into the very fabric of their religion and their daily lives.

Mexican artist and art historian Miguel Covarrubias, who first visited Bali on his honeymoon in 1930, described Balinese art as "a highly developed, although informal Baroque folk art that combines the peasant liveliness with the refinement of classicism of Hinduistic Java, but free of the conservative prejudice and with a new vitality fired by the exuberance of the demonic spirit of the tropical primitive".

Covarrubias wrote a fabulous book, Island of Bali, published in 1937 and you can get it on Amazon if you'd like to learn about Balinese art history, culture and beliefs.

The word for hand in Bahasa Indonesia is 'tangan'.
In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson
