FAQs

No color is added to our mine-specific turquoise, from the Southwest US and northern Mexico. Stabilized turquoise, most common and affordable, contains clear resins that increase the durability of naturally soft and porous turquoise, while protecting the stones’ natural colors. Enhanced “Zachery Method,” reserved for better quality turquoise, is a proprietary treatment to reduce the porosity of turquoise while increasing its luster. A mineral bath—using those found in natural turquoise--and an electrical charge are the main components. No hardening materials are used. Grade AAA gem turquoise is sufficiently dense on its own and requires no additional treatment. It’s the least common, with only 3-5% of all turquoise making the grade.

Our copal beads are newly made from resin of the copal (Protium) trees, found mostly in Southeast Asia. Synthetic resins are added to the tree resin for stability and durability. Both copal and amber begin as tree resin, but the differences are extreme. Copal is made primarily from copal trees and most of it is less than a lifetime old. Some antique copal exists, largely in the form of African trade beads. These are still much newer than amber. Amber is formed from many different types of trees, the most common being Baltic amber created largely from coniferous (pine) tree resin. Other types of amber were formed from resin of trees now extinct. All true amber is thousands to millions of years old.
