Sustainable Nutrition Manual

A practical manual and resource in three parts designed for use with farmers in Malawi and other African countries.

The manual was planned, written and illustrated to encourage sustainable (permaculture) living techniques among local farming communities as a way to improve diet, nutrition, crop yields and the environment. The ideas in it can be applied anywhere. It's a great resource for charities working with subsistence farmers in the developing world and is currently in use in many African countries.

Part 1 - Healthy Humans is about the human body and nutrition; digestive system, food choices; diversity in diet; delicious recipes and suggestions for tasty, healthy meals.

Part 2 - Healthy Environments is about natural systems; the nature cycle and the water cycle, soil formation and nutrition, and introduces permaculture ideas.

Part 3 - Healthy Designs is about applying the knowledge of the previous parts to your environment and creating designs for sustainable living. Also includes a huge index of Malawian food plants with information to help cultivate and use them.

The first three parts are about 140 A4 pages each and can be printed off and bound how you choose, in spiral binding or in a ring folder. There are some blank pages to make notes on. The fourth file to download contains 16 large (A2) posters illustrating key elements of the manual.

They are quite large files (18.1mb is the largest) so allow a bit of time for downloading, especially if you are in an area with poor or unreliable internet connection.

You are welcome to copy and share this manual in any form.
Please acknowledge the source when sharing any part of it, using this citation: Nordin, Stacia. Sustainable Nutrition Manual: Food, Water, Agriculture & Environment. 2nd ed. Ed. Sarah Beare. Lilongwe: World Food Programme Malawi, 2016.

I am proud to have been involved in this worthwhile and fascinating project and want to share widely. This is a not for profit document so you can download it here at minimal cost which simply covers Etsy listing and sales fees, with a small margin for currency transaction fluctuations.

You can find out more about my work and a bit about the manual on my website (but there is no download for the book there).
