Batik is a masterpiece of Indonesian cultural heritage. The word batik comes from the Javanese word ‘Amba’ means ‘to write’, and ‘titik’ means little dot or to make dots. In a manuscript on a lontar leaf originating from around 1520 AD which was found in Galuh, South Cirebon, West Java, it is written that the word batik means ‘seratan’ which in Javanese means ‘writing’.

Batik is a technique of decorating cloth by applying wax on certain parts of it and then dyeing the cloth. The wax protects the original color of the cloth during the dyeing process. When the cloth has been dyed as desired, the wax is removed by soaking it in boiling water. The contrast between the dyed and undyed parts forms the pattern. The wax resist process and dyeing process are repeated over and over to create complex multicolored designs. There are three main types of batik cloth based on the making technique:

1. Batik tulis (hand waxed or hand drawn batik) which is produced by painting the wax on the cloth using a traditional tool called canting [cha:nting].
2. Batik cap [cha:p] or hand stamped batik which is produced by stamping the wax on the cloth using a copper stamp.
3. Batik kombinasi which is produced with the combination of the first two techniques by using canting and copper stamp.

However, in order to meet the growing demand for batik cloth, and make it more affordable, there is cloth with batik design produced by printed either by hand or machine. Of course, unlike the three main types of batik cloth, printed batik cloth only has clear pattern and color on one side. In addition, there is painted batik which is produced by painting the wax on the cloth using a brush. Its pattern and color look exactly the same on both side like three main types of batik cloth. But unlike hand drawn batik, the wax is painted directly on the cloth without making sketch first by using pencil.

There are thousands batik motifs for different wearers and occasions. In the ancient time, certain batik motifs could only be worn by noble families, but nowadays everybody from all economic levels can also wear those motifs for everyday use as well as for special events. As time passes and the development of technology, batik motif is not only used for clothing, but also printed on various handicrafts such as wooden crafts, painting, household ceramics, pottery, gift ornaments, bamboo, leather handicrafts, and so on. In 2009, Indonesian Batik was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

P.S.
- The product’s color may be slightly different due to the photographic effects or your monitor settings.

- There is no pattern on hand drawn and hand painted batik clothes that will actually look symmetrical or identical to each other.

- Don’t be alarmed if you find some black spots that are not part of the pattern. Those are just the remaining of dried wax from the making process.
