Item details

The eyes of Buddha, gently closed in meditation, are the feature of this beautiful 40mm artisan-carved bone cabochon.

It's the largest of three different sizes that I offer in this design - the original Buddha Eyes on Etsy. I came up with the concept of creating these cabs very early in the life of Indounik and first began selling them in September 2010 - the month my store opened

You'll now find other versions being offered on Etsy but I hope you'll agree these are the best lookers. I also offer the biggest range of this design in different sizes and drilled with two or four holes.

These pieces are crafted for Indounik in Bali where Buddhism and other religions have had a big influence in shaping the type of Hinduism practised by most of the island's 4.2 million inhabitants.

While they're ideal for jewelry-making and would make a stunning pendant, they could also feature on a scrapbook page or the cover of a journal of your innermost thoughts. One could just as easily be set in a wooden box to keep safe your treasures.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment.

You can see my variations of this design and other Buddha cabs here http://www.etsy.com/shop/Indounik/search?search_query=buddha&search_submit=&search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_6011725&shopname=Indounik

Bali is the biggest Hindu outpost outside of India but it's a hybrid form of the religion that incorporates elements of Buddhism, animism, and even Chinese Confucianism.

This religion is practised by more than 90 percent of Balinese as well as some residents of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Lombok, the little island to Bali's east. Together they represent only about 3% of the population of Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation state.

What might not be so widely known is that in Java, once predominantly Hindu, a substantial number of Muslims follow a non-orthodox, Hindu-influenced form of Islam known as Agama Jawa.

Crafting beautiful ornaments and jewelry pieces from animal bone is a time-honoured tradition among many of the world's cultures, including several of the diverse ethnic groups scattered through the Indonesian archipelago.

Delicately hand-carved pieces come alive in the hands of talented artisans such as those found on the island of Bali. Bone is a sturdy and versatile material that is durable enough to craft a treasured heirloom.

The bone used in Indounik cabochons is from cattle and is sourced from neighbouring Java.
