Big, bold, and beautiful, here is a real show piece! This is a large, rare, and wonderful blue-green turquoise cabochon from the Burro Mountains near Silver City, New Mexico. Since this turquoise is rarely seen for sale, we consider ourselves lucky to have found a small parcel of Burro Mountain Turquoise cabochons a couple of years ago from a gem and mineral dealer, who in turn bought them directly from the miner. This material has been stabilized solely to harden the stone, a treatment much more common in today's turquoise market than most people realize (see note below about stabilization). It was then polished, although it still retains some of its raw character, as you can see in the photos. For example, unlike a standard cabochon, it does not have a completely flat back. The second photo features a rear view of the un-backed cabochon with its natural matrix in which the Turquoise formed. We do our best to take photos that reflect the true colors of the turquoise and the colors shown are very close to the actual shade of turquoise. Colors on other computer monitors may vary slightly.
We used to own and manage a small hand-crafted jewelry business called "Silver and Stone Works" in New Mexico. However, in 2016, due to health reasons, we relocated to the Oregon Coast and decided to close the business. We always took great pride in using the highest quality (and sometimes quite rare) materials we could locate, many purchased directly from the source. We now find themselves with a leftover inventory of finished cabochons and preformed cabochons, and are selling everything at very competitive prices.
This large, chunky freeform cabochon is approximately 57mm x 30mm x 10mm, and weighs about 106 carats.

Native Americans and later the Spanish had originally mined turquoise in the Burro Mountains of Grant County, New Mexico. Artifacts, stone tools, and fragments of turquoise and hammers of local granite were common at the sites. Modern mining followed the discovery of turquoise and copper by American prospectors in 1870. It has been said that more high-grade turquoise was produced in this area than any single deposit on record.
Turquoise was a stone held in high regard by Native Americans and there are many legends surrounding it... The Apache felt that turquoise on a gun or bow made it shoot straight. The Navajo consider it as good fortune to wear and believe it could appease the Wind Spirit. The Pima consider it to bring good fortune and strength and that it helped overcome illness. The Zuni believe that blue turquoise was male and of the sky and green turquoise was female and of the earth. Pueblo Indians thought that its color was stolen from the sky. In Hopi legend the lizard who travels between the above and the below, excretes turquoise and that the stone can hold back floods.
NOTE: A few words about stabilization... According to one knowledgeable and reliable source we found, around 97% of all Turquoise on the market today is stabilized. Stabilization may be necessary with softer types of Turquoise in order to maintain the beautiful color of the Turquoise and to harden the stone for cutting and durability. Unstabilized Turquoise may change color over time because it can gradually absorb oils from the skin as it is worn and as it comes into constant contact with the natural elements. The colors in stabilized Turquoise, however, are permanent. It is important to note that the term "stabilized" does NOT indicate the stone has been dyed or enhanced, simply hardened.
