Item details

Crafted in Bali from bone, each of these beautiful burgundy Dewi Sita buttons has a unique appearance with some retaining more colour than others after the dyeing process.

As Bali is the biggest Hindu outpost outside of India, I named them for the Hindu deity Dewi Sita, wife of Rama, and an exemplar of womanly and wifely virtue. While Hindu devotees may know her as Devi Sita or Maa Sita, I've used the name by which she's known in Bali and throughout the rest of Indonesia.

The buttons have a lovely, natural feel that makes them a delight to work with, whether you're a garment-maker, a knitter or a scrapbooker. They'd make awesome button jewelry too.

PayPal is my preferred method of payment.

You'll find more of these dyed bone beauties in my Buttons section here -

According to Indonesian Hindu belief, Dewi Sita is the avatar of the goddess Lakshmi, and her husband, Sri Rama, is the avatar of Wisnu (Vishnu).

Together, they are central characters in the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, and as such, they feature prominently in Balinese dance, including the Kecak, one of the island's most popular tourist performances.

Most of Indonesia's Hindu population is concentrated on Bali.
“Blow O wind to where my loved one is. Touch him and come touch me soon. I'll feel his gentle touch through you and meet his beauty in the moon. These things are much for the one who loves. One can live by them alone: that he and I breathe the same air and that the Earth we tread is one.” ~ Ramayana
