Silkworms live exclusively on mulberry leaves. It can be white, black, fruiting or fruitless but it has to be mulberry. Beet greens or cabbage can be used for the first 24 hours if need be.
The golden color of the silk comes from the worm spit glue that holds the cocoon together called sericin. If degummed, this is a pure white, lustrous silk.
Grown In California
Great to degum and use in spun yarn, nuno felting, embellishing, scrap books and ATC's, any fiber arts and crafts.
I've been told the outer, rough fiber used by the silkworm to attach the cocoon to spin can be used in soap making & cosmetics! Who knew?
