Sphene (also known as Titanite) is a rare gemstone prized for its color, and it's dazzling optical properties. "Dispersion" is the technical name for the fiery rainbows given off by a diamond. Sphene is one of the very few naturally occurring stones which has more dispersion than a diamond. They are difficult to capture in photographs, but in person, this stone throws off bright prismatic flashes of red, green and blue. It is truly stunning to see. One of the things that makes Sphene such an uncommon gemstone is that it is quite rare to find it in sizes large enough and without flaws to actually be used as a gemstone. Sphene has a hardness of 5.5. It could be used in jewelry, but much care should be taken to prevent chipping during setting. It is not recommended as a ring stone, a pendant would be better.
This stone is natural, and has not been heat treated. It is largely clean. It has only one inclusion--a large plate-like inclusion protruding into the pavilion of the stone. It is visible in the photos, but does not significantly impact the beauty of the stone. This stone weighs 2.58 carats and measures 9 x 7 x 5mm deep. It is cut in a very elegant antique rectangular cushion design.
All my stones are hand-cut by me, and the stone you are buying is always the stone pictured. Please see my shop policies for more information, or feel free to contact me with your questions and feedback.
