Item details

A Niddy Noddy is used to make skeins from yarn by hand. It is a useful tool for the spinner to skein newly spun yarn before washing. The small one yard size is especially useful for samples. It can also be helpful while reskeining on the rare occasions when it is necessary to unknit a project.

These Noddies are hand turned. They feature three ends designed to capture the yarn and one end constructed so the accumulated skein can slide off easily when finished. The surface of these Noddies was smoothed to 1000 grit to assure there will be no picks or catches on the yarn. The one yard Noddy now available was turned from Black Walnut. Noddies can be made from several domestic (Black Walnut, Maple, Cherry, Yellow Birch) and exotic species ( Padauk, Bubinga, Satinwood). If you would like a Noddy made from a species different from the one available please let me know via the "Request Custom Item" tab on the Shop home Page. This Noddy is easily disassembled for storage and travel.

The one yard Noddy has 8.5 in (21.5 cm) arms and 6.5 in (16.5 cm) center. All members are approximately 0.75 in (2 cm) in diameter. The two yard noddy has 14 in (35.5 cm) arms and a 14.5 in (36 cm) center. All members of the large Noddy are also approximately 0.75 in (2 cm) diameter.

Additional policies

Please note that I ship goods ONLY within the United States.

I am delighted to take on special projects to meet the specific needs of individual customers. Should you have such needs please contact me so we can agree upon your requirements.

Even after it has been cut and dried wood continues to move and breathe with the climate and seasons. I do my best to account for this attribute in my work. I emphasize natural features or defects in the wood. When I find an internal branch, scar, crack, or other apparent defect that was not visible in the living tree, I try to make that feature a part of the design of the piece. This often means that the design must be substantially changed at the lathe in order to preserve the newly discovered feature. You should understand that this is a natural property of woods and that your piece will likely be subject to such seasonal movements.

My standard practice is to emphasize the color, pattern, and texture of the wood. This means that I sometimes do not apply a finish to the wood. A consequence is that the final surface is often smoother and more natural in appearance than would be observed if a finish had been applied.

If you have any questions or discussion about the surface, finish, or appearance of your item or about cracks, movement, or change of dimension related to climate or season, please contact me.

All of this means that wood is delicate and it is not intended for rough use or handling. All of my pieces are NOT intended to be put into dish washers, microwave ovens, cat boxes, other similar devices, or outdoors without protection from weather. Some wood species change color, shape, or texture after exposure to sunlight and so your piece should not be exposed to the sun for prolonged periods. Your piece should not be washed with detergents or other agents suitable for cleaning other materials.

I hope that you will be as pleased using and enjoying your item as I was making it for you.
